Our Shield, Our House System

Children in Year 1 and Year 2 are now in one of four houses. Children in Reception will be put into a house as the year progresses. The houses have inter-house challenges such as sports day and the winner have their coloured ribbons added to the challenge cup.

From the beginning of Epiphany term 2019, Year 2 children began to receive house points.  These are added together and a prize is awarded at the end of each term. The House Point cup is also awarded and coloured ribbons of that house are added to the cup..

The idea behind school houses is that children across different year groups work together and achieve things together. Children through their houses will know more children across the school and increase the sense of community that Saint Jérôme Church of England Bilingual School is committed to. Siblings are generally in the same house to add further to this sense of community.

The lion

John Lyon was a rich farmer, who in the 16th Century, was given written permission by Queen Elizabeth I to found “the free Grammar School of John Lyon”. By the 19th Century, helped by John Lyon’s gifts of money and land, “the Free Grammar School” had become Harrow School—now one of the most famous schools in the country and a founding partner of our school. The rampant lion symbol of Harrow School (a pun on the name Lyon) was adopted by Saint Jérôme Church of England Bilingual School which is proud to be a 21st Century “Free school” founded in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

A lion features in an important story from the life of our patron—Saint Jérôme: One day, a lion entered the monastery where Jérôme lived, causing his fellow monks to run away. Jérôme recognised that the lion was injured and stayed behind to heal it by removing the thorn from his paw.

The book

Le livre

The Bible is the Christian Holy Book—the single most important book ever written. It is made up of 66 individual books: 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Parts of the writing contained in the Old Testament are also sacred to Jewish and Muslim people. Christians believe the Bible is the Word of God revealed to humans and written down by them.

The Bible has been translated from its original languages: Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek so that everyone can read it in their own language. Jérôme was a monk who translated most of the Bible into Latin. He has written commentaries on the four books (gospels) from the beginning of the New Testament which tell us about the life of Jesus Christ. Jérôme has also written many books of his own. He is recognised as a Saint and a doctor of the Church and lived from about 347ad—30 September 420ad. His Saint’s day is 30 September—which is the day that our school was given approval to be founded.

The tree

L’arbre

The fruit tree and its leaves are symbols of physical growth, spiritual nourishment and how we can grow and flourish within the love of God. The tree looks different in each term or season and, like our school and our pupils, grows each year.

There are 252 mentions of different trees in the Bible and Jesus uses a tree to remind us that there is a connection between character and conduct and a good tree can only produce good fruit. The Fruit of the Holy Spirit is a biblical term that sums up nine attributes of a Christian life according to Paul in his Letter to the Galatians: “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”.

The fleur

La fleur

The English translation of fleur-de-lis is flower of the lily. Jesus uses a beautiful lily to teach us that God loves us even more than flowers, He knows our needs and will provide for us if we ask Him.

The symbol shows a stylised lily which has many meanings. Traditionally it has been used to represent French royalty and in that sense it is said to signify perfection, light and life. The symbol has been used in France since the 12th Century when the French kings used the fleur-de-lis on their shields.

The fleur-de-lis has three “petals” which also help us to remember the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity is the Christian belief that there is only One God; who is three really distinct Persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Each of the persons is God.
