On Saturday 10 October, 31 children from our Upper School Choir took part in the annual Commemoration Concert at Harrow School.

With only four weeks to prepare, the children learnt two pieces. The first was Benjamin Britten’s Psalm 150, which they performed confidently with the orchestra. The second was But Don’t Forget John Coltrane, a song composed especially to tell the story of Miles Davis, who would have been 100 years old in May. This was clearly the children’s favourite, and they performed it with Harrow School’s Jazz Band.

The children were also treated to a performance of Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, based on a melody by Henry Purcell, which introduces each section of the orchestra in turn. It was a real inspiration for our young orchestra players.

We are very grateful to Miss Elin Davies, Music Outreach Fellow at Harrow School, for running weekly choir sessions and giving our children these wonderful performance opportunities. Miss Davies said she was incredibly proud of the way the children rose to such challenging music, and so are we!

Singing “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” (Psalm 150) on such a special stage was a true expression of our values of Joy and Courage.
